| Artist Statement I paint landscapes, working in oils and pastels. From my childhood on a farm in Idaho, I dip into a well of happy memories spent surrounded by rugged mountains, peaceful meadows, and rolling hills of ripening grain. Landscape painting reminds me of the pleasure of open spaces and the energy of being surrounded by growing things. I appreciate and am influenced by the contemplative feeling of the 19th century American landscape painters Fredrich Church, Thomas Moran and George Inness. |
Working from my photo references, I analyze a scene looking for a particular mood. I work lightly, applying many thin layers to achieve glowing and subtle color. Choosing hues to enhance depth and distance, I guide the viewer into the landscape. My goal is to invite pleasant and peaceful memories. |
